This year, we’re supporting just five of the causes closest to our hearts to make the biggest possible difference – one of which is Cancer Research UK. Read on as we learn more about the valuable work we’ll be helping the charity to continue in 2019.
Cancer Research UK is the world’s largest cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Their vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured – from the most common types to those that affect just a few people. In the 1970s, less than a quarter of people with cancer survived, but over the last 40 years, survival has doubled – all because of the work of dedicated charities like this one.
In 2017/2018 alone, £423 million was spent on cancer research. This money funded grants to researchers, research institutes, and the organisation’s Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres – where scientists, doctors and nurses work tirelessly to make progress. But after a recent study concluded that 4 in 10 cancers could be prevented with lifestyle changes, a large portion of funds is now spent on educating the public on how we could all reduce our risk of diagnosis. Smoking, obesity, alcohol and sun damage are all causes of cancer, and as more and more people are made aware of the damage these lifestyle choices can cause, the charity’s aim of seeing three-quarters of people survive cancer by 2034 gets ever more achievable.
Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding, so they rely solely on donations to move closer to finding a cure. 80p of every £1 is used to beat cancer, and here’s just some of the ways our work will drive live-saving research:
- £5 will stock research labs with the essential chemicals they need for their ground-breaking experiments
- £15 covers the cost of a visitor seeking help at one of their mobile awareness units
- £30 allows a patient with lung cancer to undergo trial treatments for a day
Every two minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, it’s a disease almost all of us will come into close contact with at some point in our lives – whether we support a family member or friend through treatment, or receive a diagnosis ourselves. This personal connection makes it no surprise a huge number of staff at PHMG voted to fundraise for Cancer Research UK in the coming year, and our projected donation of £20,000 will go a long way to helping beat cancer sooner.
